The 4 Cs — Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat — are the universal language for describing diamond quality. Developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), this grading system allows shoppers to understand exactly what they're buying. Here's a detailed breakdown of each C.
Cut: The Most Important C
Diamond cut refers not to the shape of the diamond, but to how well the diamond's facets interact with light. A well-cut diamond will appear more brilliant, fiery, and scintillating than a poorly cut one of the same carat weight and quality.
GIA grades cut on a scale of Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor. At Gallo Jewelry, we recommend Excellent or Very Good cut grades for the best-looking diamond in your budget.
Color: D through Z
Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (completely colorless) to Z (noticeably light yellow or brown). Colorless diamonds (D-F) are the rarest and most valuable. Near-colorless diamonds (G-J) appear virtually colorless once set in a ring, making them an excellent value.
For white gold or platinum settings, a G-H color grade looks stunning. For yellow or rose gold settings, you can go slightly lower (H-I) as the warm metal masks slight color in the diamond.
Clarity: Inclusions and Blemishes
Clarity refers to the absence of inclusions (internal characteristics) and blemishes (surface irregularities). The GIA clarity scale ranges from Flawless (FL) to Included (I1, I2, I3).
Most inclusions are invisible to the naked eye. We recommend VS1, VS2, or SI1 clarity grades for the best combination of appearance and value. These diamonds appear completely clean to the eye without paying the premium for flawless stones.
Carat: Weight, Not Size
Diamond carat refers to the weight of the diamond, not its physical size. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Larger carat weights are rarer and more expensive, but a diamond's visual size also depends on its cut and shape. A well-cut 0.9-carat diamond may appear larger than a poorly cut 1-carat stone.
