Diamond Carat Guide — Understanding Weight, Size & Value

When most people think about diamond size, they think about carats. But carat weight is just one piece of the puzzle — and understanding it fully will help you make a smarter, more satisfying diamond purchase at Gallo Jewelry.

What Is a Diamond Carat?

Carat is the unit of weight used to measure diamonds. One carat equals exactly 0.2 grams, or 200 milligrams. The word "carat" comes from the carob seeds historically used to balance scales when weighing diamonds, as the seeds were believed to have consistent weights.

Carats are also expressed in points: 1 carat = 100 points. So a 0.75 carat diamond is 75 points; a 0.5 carat diamond is 50 points.

Carat vs. Size: They're Not the Same

This is the most important distinction to understand. Carat measures weight, not physical size. Two diamonds of equal carat weight can look significantly different in size depending on their cut and shape.

  • A well-cut diamond appears larger because its proportions maximize the surface area viewed from above (the "face-up" size)
  • Different shapes have different face-up sizes at the same carat weight — oval and marquise diamonds appear notably larger face-up than round or princess diamonds of the same weight
  • A diamond with a very deep cut will look smaller face-up because its weight is distributed downward

How Carat Affects Price

Diamond prices increase exponentially with carat weight, not linearly. This is because larger diamonds are significantly rarer than smaller ones. Prices also jump significantly at "magic numbers" — 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 carats — because these are popular benchmarks.

A savvy strategy: choose a diamond just below these benchmarks. A 0.95-carat diamond looks virtually identical to a 1-carat diamond but can be significantly less expensive.

What Carat Size Is Right for You?

The right carat size depends on your budget, finger size, and personal preferences. Smaller fingers (size 4-5) can be overwhelmed by very large stones; larger fingers (size 7+) can carry bigger diamonds beautifully. At Gallo Jewelry, we help you find the ideal balance of carat weight, cut, color, and clarity for your specific budget.

Remember: a beautifully cut 0.75-carat diamond will look more brilliant and impressive than a poorly cut 1-carat stone. Cut quality always matters more than carat weight alone.
