Colored Gemstones

Sapphire & Ruby

Sapphire and ruby tennis bracelets and a lab-created sapphire pendant, set in gold. Looking for a different stone? Ask us and we'll help you find it.

Know Your Stone

The three classic colored gemstones.

Sapphire

Hardness 9 · September birthstone · 45th anniversary

Best-known in cornflower blue, but also occurs in pink, yellow, green, and the rare orange-pink padparadscha. Second only to diamond in hardness — sapphires are excellent for everyday wear, including engagement rings.

Ruby

Hardness 9 · July birthstone · 15th & 40th anniversaries

The same mineral as sapphire (corundum), colored red by trace chromium. Just as hard as sapphire, so rubies also wear well every day.

Burmese rubies command the highest premium for their pure red color — sometimes called pigeon's blood. Mozambique rubies offer excellent value with similar visual qualities.

Emerald

Hardness 7.5–8 · May birthstone · 20th & 35th anniversaries

Beryl with chromium and vanadium. Most emeralds contain inclusions called jardin — accepted as part of the stone's character. Slightly softer than sapphire or ruby; we recommend protective settings.

Colombian and Zambian emeralds are the two principal sources.
