The Custom Design Journey: From First Sketch to Finished Ring in Three Weeks

Custom design sounds intimidating and slow. In reality, the timeline is short — about three weeks from approved concept to finished piece — and the process is collaborative every step. Here's what it looks like when you walk into our Wayne showroom and say, 'I want something that's mine.'
Conversation First (Day 1)
Custom always starts with a conversation, either in the showroom or via FaceTime. We ask about who's wearing it, what they wear now, what the occasion is, what stones speak to them, whether there's an heirloom involved, what the budget is, what the timeline needs to be. This isn't a sales pitch — we need this information to design well. The conversation usually takes 45 to 90 minutes.
Reference and Inspiration (Days 1–3)
Bring Pinterest boards, screenshots, photos of family rings. Tell us what you don't like, too — sometimes that's more useful than what you do. We translate the references into a design brief: shape, scale, metal, stone count, gallery style, signature details. You see the brief in writing before we move to CAD.
CAD Design (Days 3–7)
Our CAD designer renders the ring in 3D from every angle — top, side, profile, through the gallery, under the stone. You see photorealistic renderings on screen, can rotate them, can see how they'd look on your finger. This is the iteration stage. Revisions are free and expected. Most rings go through two or three rounds before approval.
Stone Selection (Days 5–10)
While CAD is in progress, we source the stone. For natural diamonds, we typically present three to five options with full GIA reports — you compare them side by side in different lighting, see them in our showroom or via video for remote clients. For lab-grown, the process is similar but selection is broader. You can also bring your own stone — heirloom, inherited, previously purchased.
Casting and Setting (Days 10–18)
Once you approve CAD and stone, the file goes to our NYC manufacturing partners — most of the work happens in the Diamond District, about twenty minutes from our Wayne showroom. The piece is 3D-printed in wax, cast in your chosen metal (14K, 18K, or platinum), hand-finished, and the stone is set by hand. We're in close contact during this phase; if anything looks off in the prototype stage, we adjust before final casting.
Final Review (Day 18–21)
The finished ring comes back to Wayne. We inspect it under magnification, check stone security, verify the engraving (if you've added one — we recommend the inside of the band), photograph it, and write the appraisal. You see it in person before it's yours.
Handoff and Aftercare
You leave with the ring, the GIA or IGI certificate, an insurance-grade written appraisal at full retail replacement value, and our lifetime warranty. The warranty covers prong retipping, stone tightening, polishing, and resizing as needed for as long as you own the piece. We see most rings back once or twice a year for cleaning and inspection — it's complimentary, takes about fifteen minutes.
What Custom Actually Costs
Custom is rarely more expensive than buying off-the-rack at a brand-name retailer. We build at cost-plus, not at markup. The premium you'd pay at a chain for a comparable ring usually covers retail real estate, marketing, and brand. Going custom with us cuts that out. A custom engagement ring in the $5,000–$10,000 range is realistic for most setting designs in 14K with a one-carat lab-grown stone, more with natural or larger stones. We quote firmly before we start.
