How to Find Your Ring Size at Home (Without Tipping Them Off)

There's no graceful way to ask a partner their ring size before a surprise proposal. Here's how to figure it out without giving anything away — and what to do if you guess wrong (you have options).

The Borrow-and-Trace Method

Find a ring they already wear on the correct finger (usually the fourth finger of the left hand, ring finger). Place it on a piece of paper. Trace the inside circle carefully with a fine pen. Bring the tracing to us — or any jeweler — and we'll match it to a US ring size in seconds. This is the most accurate at-home method.

The String or Floss Method

Wrap a piece of string or dental floss around the base of the finger. Mark where it overlaps with a pen. Measure the length in millimeters. The chart: 49mm = size 5, 51mm = size 5.5, 52mm = size 6, 54mm = size 6.5, 55mm = size 7, 57mm = size 7.5, 58mm = size 8. Measure at the end of the day when fingers are at their fullest.

Borrow and Bring

Slip one of their rings onto your own finger and note exactly where it stops. Show us — we'll size from that. Slightly less precise than tracing but works in a pinch.

Account for Knuckles

If knuckles are noticeably larger than the base of the finger, size to fit over the knuckle (it'll spin a bit at the base — that's normal and adjustable). Don't undersize hoping it'll work; a ring that won't pass the knuckle isn't wearable.

Time of Day and Climate Matter

Fingers swell with heat, salt, and exercise. Take measurements at the end of a normal day in normal indoor temperature. Don't measure first thing in the morning in winter — that's the smallest fingers will be all year.

If You Get It Wrong

Every Gallo engagement ring includes a complimentary resize within the first year. Most settings can go up or down one full size with no issue. Some — eternity bands with stones all the way around, certain vintage styles — have to be remade. We'll tell you upfront. If the size is dramatically off, we resize without question. Don't let sizing anxiety drive your proposal timing.

Standard Sizes by Hand

Average women's ring size in the US is 6 to 6.5. Average men's is 9 to 10. If you have absolutely no information to work from and the surprise has to happen, size 6 for women and 9 for men is a reasonable default we can resize after. Better still: bring a friend or family member into the conspiracy.
